Genital Herpes Diagnosis:
It can be so hard to receive your herpes diagnosis. If you have just found out that you or someone you love has contracted this virus, I am very sorry. BUT, it is not all bad. I am sure that many of the feelings you are experiencing could include fear, shame, and regret, but while it’s important to honor your feelings, you can absolutely live a great life with herpes. I have had vaginal genital herpes for over 20 years and can tell you that I have no fear, no shame, and even no regrets.
Do I wish that I never contracted vaginal herpes? To be honest, I am not sure. My first answer would of course be YES, because I have had so many issues with HSV2 over the years, but contracting herpes has also given me quite a few gifts even if it didn’t seem like that at the time. For starters it forced me to stop have unprotected sex and this alone could have saved my life. As my life progressed and I was plagued with constant herpes outbreaks, it forced me to take a look at my diet and add supplements to my daily routine that benefited me in countless other ways.
I was also terrified of dating with herpes; that I would be rejected or even humiliated for having been so dumb to expose myself. But you know, 20 years later, it all went all right.
The actual worst thing that ever happened to me was that once or twice a year I cannot have sex with my husband because I have a herpes outbreak. That’s it. He understands (even if he still gets grumpy!), but it is such a non-issue for us now. It would be like me telling him we could not have sex because I had a bad cold. It’s the, “not having sex” part that makes him grumpy, not the herpes.
So don’t worry too much if you have just been diagnosed with herpes. It really is all going to be OK.
