I tried baking soda - big mistake. The powder was course and irritated my skin further. The topical treatment that works best is lysine cream for cold sores. Apply it at night and by morning I usually feel reduced symptoms. If I apply it when itching starts, no bumps appear.

I also backtracked in my treatment because I was researching every single little thing I could to fight herpes. None of it was working all that well and I was getting frustrated, which, of course, made the situation worse. So, I thought, what causes herpes to be active? Answer: irritation to the nervous system.

I thought up the best neural protectors I knew of and decided to take my top choice, turmeric, daily. It's a brain tonic, reduces systemic inflammation and soothes your nerves. I mixed a teaspoon in water with a few drops of stevia twice a day and drank it down. Symptoms cleared up completely until just before my period.

Right now (PMS time) I have only mild tingling and slight itching. No burning. I also mixed up a reishi mushroom tea and that seems to be helping as well. But I really think it's about a calm nervous system and strong immune system for me - I generally suffer from anxiety disorder, a luxury I can't afford any longer.

Mi biggest problem now is not the symptoms of herpes but the fact that I am single and most of my friends are coupled up. I am happy by myself but often feel lonesome and dating seems pretty pointless. I used to go out all the time just as a diversion, just to spend time with people. You never know. But now I see a cute guy in a store or walking down the street and I just duck my head and walk on by, thinking he wouldn't want anything to do with me anyway. Especially when there are so many more beautiful, successful, DISEASE-FREE women out there to date.
